About Us

The Golden Lion

As the premier award winning Gastro Pub in South Wales, we pride ourselves on setting the bar in best in class cuisine, fine dining and customer service.

Nestled in the heart of Wale’s beautiful Monmouthshire, and the stunning historical village of Magor, The Golden Lion is a standout Welsh fine dining experience.

Opened in 2014 by restaurateurs Louise Jones and Garth Davis, The Golden Lion has won acclaim and awards across the UK for both it’s ala carte and Vegan menus. Using only the finest seasonal produce from local farms, markets and producers, many of the seasonal ingredients used by Head Chef Ariel Mlotek are what inspire our menu.

Set in a stunning and historically listed building that is over 500 years old, the restaurant is sumptuously furnished, with a beautiful outdoor beer garden, events room and sports bar.

In the front room beyond the dining area is the intimate front bar where we welcome families, pets and discerning beverage enthusiasts. Adored by diners and drinkers alike, the bar and the sports bar off to the side buzzes away until midnight most nights.

Perfect for events, parties and intimate dinners, The Golden Lion is your only choice for the highest quality dining experience in the south of Wales.

With the Christmas holiday season approaching, PETA went out searching for the best Vegan Christmas dinners available in restaurants and pubs across the UK.Just as there are 12 days of Christmas, PETA selected the top 12 menus that meet the growing demand for hearty, healthy, and humane holiday fare – and Magor’s The Golden Lion earnt itself a spot on the list.

The Golden Lion Vegan menu included a pumpkin pâté served on top of chopped and marinated vegetable medallions with warm bread to start, a traditional Tofurky dish served with vegetables and gravy as a main, and a vegan brulée served with strawberry ice-cream for dessert, among other options – all completely free of meat, eggs and dairy foods.

PETA’s Director Elisa Allen said: “PETA encourages all Britons to celebrate a compassionate Christmas by enjoying a vegan feast – with all the taste and none of the cruelty of a traditional meaty spread.” …“Thanks to The Golden Lion, it’s easier than ever to extend the spirit of giving to all this holiday season by leaving animals off our plates”.

Other eateries on PETA’s list are located in Glasgow, London, Northampton, and elsewhere across the UK. The Golden Lion is very proud to have been recognised and to have received a framed certificate and be featured on PETA’s website. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk.
